Petredec, a global leader in the LPG value chain, in collaboration with Tanzania’s renowned ASAS Group of Companies, has officially launched the highly anticipated Tanga LPG Terminal project. This monumental development represents a pivotal moment in East Africa’s energy sector and is poised to revolutionize access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy across the region.
The Tanga LPG Terminal is designed to be the largest of its kind in Tanzania, underscoring its strategic importance in addressing the growing demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and supporting the nation’s clean energy ambitions. The project aligns closely with the Government of Tanzania’s objective to scale access to clean cooking energy, a priority initiative strongly championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Strategically located on a 26-hectare site in Chongoleani, Tanga Bay, the terminal will be equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure to handle large-scale LPG imports and distribution. The first phase of development will feature six mounded LPG storage spheres, offering a massive 40,000 cubic metres of storage capacity, along with eight high-capacity truck loading gantries. A 2.8-kilometre underwater pipeline will also be constructed to facilitate direct unloading from ships, marking a significant leap in the region’s import infrastructure capabilities.
One of the project’s most notable features is its ability to accommodate Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs)—vessels currently unable to dock at any of Tanzania’s existing ports. This strategic advancement will reduce congestion at the Port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s primary seaport, and diversify the country’s import capacity, increasing supply reliability and lowering the cost of LPG across East Africa.
Speaking on the occasion, Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec, remarked, “History has shown us that the cornerstone of reliable and competitively priced LPG supply is world-class infrastructure. The Tanga LPG Terminal is exactly that — a transformative project that positions Tanzania as a key clean energy hub in the region.”
Beyond its logistical impact, the terminal is expected to deliver widespread socio-economic benefits. By increasing the affordability and availability of LPG, the project will promote the use of clean cooking solutions, particularly in rural and off-grid communities, thereby contributing to efforts to combat deforestation and improve public health outcomes. LPG remains one of the most practical short-term solutions for clean energy access in developing regions, and this terminal will accelerate its adoption across East Africa.
Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, also expressed his support: “This investment from Petredec marks a major milestone for our LPG sector. It is in perfect alignment with our clean cooking vision and national expansion strategy.”
Highlighting the strength of the partnership, Naif Jaffer Abri, CEO of ASAS Group, said, “This terminal is a shining example of how international expertise and local commitment can come together to bring a truly impactful project to life. We are excited to play a key role in expanding energy access for Tanzanians.”
With the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract already awarded and the terminal access road completed, full-scale construction is set to commence in the coming weeks. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027, delivering a sustainable energy future to millions.
